Abstract
Recently, the reduction of friction and wear-related mechanical failures in moving mechanical systems has become increasingly important due to the negative impact of friction on durability, efficiency, and environmental friendliness. Therefore, the search continues for lubricants (solid and liquid), coatings, and novel materials that can diminish friction and wear. Materials from the graphene family are one of the largest discoveries of this era that scientists have studied. Researchers have investigated graphene family materials, which are promising additives for different lubrication systems due to their special physicochemical properties. This review provides an overview of studies conducted on the tribological properties of graphene family materials, such as graphene, functionalized graphene, composites of graphene nanoparticle-decorated graphene, and other materials. The article also discusses graphene-family materials as lubricating additives, as well as unsolved matters and optimistic perspectives in the future.
